Why Odourless Paint Is The Safest Bet

By Kathryn Smith

Odorless paints are the answer to an old dilemma, one that may not have taken center stage very often but is nevertheless important: the problem of dealing with paint odors. Known colloquially as "paint stink", the heavy, lingering smell of a fresh paint job is not something many of us remember with a thrill of pleasure. Quite the reverse: due to a series of organic chemical compounds known as volatile organic compounds (VOC), the smell of paint has the potential to give us headaches and make us a lot sicker than we'd like to imagine, unless we come up with a solution.

VOCs have the potential to trigger side-effects, especially when used to paint indoor walls in houses where full ventilation may prove problematic. It is important to take into consideration this issue once the decision to repaint, redo or redecorate has been taken. An option which could be taken into account at this point is to use an odorless paint instead of a traditional one. Odorless paints have a lower concentration of VOCs and are therefore less noxious, less unpleasant and considerably less likely to cause side-effects than traditional paints.

Odorless paint is highly recommended when you want to repaint one or all of your rooms. It will make it easier to breath and you will not have any headache problems.

Odorless paints are typically extracted from clay (clay-based paint), milk or else limestone. Limestone-based paint is also suitable for painting outside walls as well as inside ones. Odorless paint can be used in virtually any type of environment - from nurseries to rooms used by individuals with respiratory sensitivities to chemical agents and respiratory afflictions such as asthma. This is made possible by the fact that is has a much lower VOC concentration that traditional paint and is not likely to trigger adverse reactions.

Odorless paints are also recommendable for environment-conscious individuals, and for those who like natural tones and would like to opt for natural-looking nuances for their inner walls.
